First, the introduction of the article were trying to define or seprate two thing, Writing and Arts.It seens simple, picture and word. However, along with the research of the ancient culture, Asian, Maya, Pre-Cloumbian, etc, more "word" need to be define or explain. Moreover, the defination of the literacy, even illiteracy, or preliteracy need to give a meaning or boundary. Because of lack of the knowledge we create so far are not able to translate into the language human use. Also, most of the development were in "picture" or a symbol.
Second, the research of Pre-Columbian(the Author picked), found lot of the pictures of animals or words are similar with pictures. To define the meaning of literacy has to look back of human history, and find how they seen about reading. The morden common meaning of literacy is the ability to read and understand the meaning comtained. In addition, literacy could lead to the ability to write.
